East Bay Moves Go Wrong in Three Ways

The East Bay is not one city. It is more than a dozen cities on two sides of a ridge, linked by busy freeways, one big tunnel, and a few bridges. A mover who treats a Berkeley walkup and a Walnut Creek ranch house like the same job will get one of them wrong. Here is where it usually breaks.

The truck sits in traffic, and you pay for it twice.

Berkeley to Walnut Creek runs through the Caldecott Tunnel on Highway 24. El Cerrito to Oakland means I-80 and I-580. Oakland to Alameda crosses a bridge or a tube. In California, the drive between your two homes is billed at double the actual time. Hit the wrong road at rush hour and every slow mile costs you twice.

Each city has its own parking permit rules.

Oakland uses an Obstruction Permit with No Parking signs posted 72 hours ahead. Berkeley uses a Temporary No Parking permit, also with a 72-hour sign rule, and it skips weekends unless the city approves them. Other cities have their own forms and timelines. A mover who only knows one city guesses at the next one, and the truck ends up with nowhere legal to park.

The quote fits a flat street, not your hill.

The East Bay has steep hill streets in Berkeley, Oakland, El Cerrito, and Orinda, and flat blocks of apartments in Emeryville and downtown Oakland. A studio walkup and a four-bedroom house in Pleasant Hill need different crews and trucks. Movers who skip the walkthrough show up with the wrong crew, can't park on the hill, and add hours you never saw on the quote.

Sound familiar? A good East Bay move starts with a plan for both cities.

Family-Owned

Since 2019

We Know Both Sides of the Hills

JH Moving is family-owned, Latino-owned, and based in Richmond. We have moved East Bay families since 2019. Our local moving crews work the shoreline cities and the Diablo Valley every week, so we know which hill streets need a smaller shuttle truck and which roads to skip at 5 p.m. Our apartment moving service handles the walkups, elevators, and tight loading zones you find in Berkeley, Emeryville, and Oakland. Seven years of East Bay moves and 300+ five-star reviews are what that adds up to.

What that looks like for your East Bay move:

We Show Up Every Single Time

We respect your time. When we commit to a move date and time, we're there. No last-minute cancellations, no no-shows, no excuses.

Transparent Hourly Pricing. No Hidden Fees. Ever.

With JH Moving, you know how pricing works before the job begins. We walk you through the hourly rate, minimums, and any quoted charges upfront so there are zero surprises on moving day.

Your Belongings Are Treated Like Our Own

Every move includes moving blankets, shrink wrap, and tape at no extra cost. Our crew is trained to protect your furniture, floors, and walls on every single job.

We Pay Our Crew Above Industry Standard

Happy movers do better work. We take care of our team so they take care of you every time.

We are licensed under Cal-T201700, and you can check that number on the BHGS license lookup. We are licensed and insured on every job. Hablamos Español. We pay our crews above industry standard because a Caldecott run, a hill shuttle, and a third-floor walkup are not jobs for rotating day labor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Local East Bay moves are billed by the hour. The price depends on crew size, how long the job takes, and the drive between your two homes. See our moving rates for current hourly pricing and what comes with every move.

For a two-bedroom apartment with a three-person crew, plan on 4 to 6 billable hours. A move that crosses the hills, like Berkeley to Walnut Creek, adds drive time. Stairs and long carries don't carry extra fees. They just add hours, and we build that time into your written quote.

Every quote is written after a walkthrough by video or in person. It includes a Not to Exceed price, which is the most you can be charged for the move as planned.
