Most East Bay leases start on the 1st of the month and end on the last day of the prior month, which on paper looks seamless but in practice leaves no real cushion for cleaning, walkthroughs, or a delayed key handoff. Add in Berkeley's UC-driven August/September turnover and the heavy June 1 student cycle, and gaps of anywhere from a few days to several weeks are normal — not a sign that something went wrong.

When that happens, your belongings have three realistic places to go: a self-storage unit you rent yourself, a portable container parked at a yard or driveway, or a storage facility coordinated through your mover. The right answer depends on the length of the gap, what you're storing, and how much of the logistics you want to manage yourself. For gaps under about a week, a tightly scheduled coordinated handoff is usually the simplest path. For anything longer, you'll want a real plan in writing before move-out day, not after — and that's where having your mover involved in the storage decision from the start makes a real difference.

The two approaches look different on paper and even more different once you add up the real total.

Self-storage in the East Bay, current 2026 rates:

• 5x5 units (closet-sized): around $36–$80/month in Oakland, $50–$70/month in Berkeley
• 5x10 units (studio's worth): around $50–$130/month
• 10x10 units (one-bedroom's worth): roughly $65–$180/month, averaging about $145 in Oakland and $180 in Berkeley
• 10x20 units (two- to three-bedroom): $179–$320/month and up
• Climate-controlled units run roughly 10–15% more

Those are the sticker prices, and they look attractive until you factor in what self-storage doesn't include on its own: a truck to get your goods there, labor to load the unit properly, a second truck and labor to retrieve everything later, packing materials, padding, and the time you spend coordinating it all. For most local moves with a gap, that adds up to roughly 1.5x to 1.6x the cost of a single move once everything is tallied.

Every time your belongings are picked up, set down, loaded, and unloaded, the chance of damage goes up. With a coordinated move-and-storage plan, our crew loads at your old home, drives to the storage facility, and stacks everything properly inside the unit — wrapped, padded, and protected. When the move and the storage are booked separately and managed by the customer, that count typically doubles. Your mover loads at the old home, unloads at the storage unit, and walks away. Then on delivery day you either rent a truck and round up help, or hire a second mover who has no prior knowledge of your belongings, no inventory list from the original load, and no liability for anything that was damaged during storage. That second team has to figure out what's in the unit, how it was packed, and how to get it out without damage. Self-storage units also aren't built for full-size moving truck access — most facilities require shuttle transfers, which adds another round of handling. Every additional touch is an additional opportunity for something to go wrong, and an additional gray area when it comes to who's responsible.

There's no fixed limit. Storage units rent month-to-month at almost every Bay Area facility, so we can coordinate a hold for a few days, a few weeks, several months, or longer — whatever your situation calls for.

For Bay Area customers, we see four common patterns: a short bridge of 1 to 7 days when leases are nearly back-to-back, a 1 to 4 week hold for the typical East Bay lease gap, a 1 to 3 month hold for home purchases waiting on close or new construction, and longer 6 to 12 month holds for customers traveling, deploying, or in transition between cities. For shorter holds we'll often recommend a smaller unit and tighter packing to keep the monthly cost down; for longer holds it's usually worth sizing up slightly and looking at climate-controlled options to protect wood furniture, electronics, and anything sensitive to the temperature swings you get in an unconditioned East Bay storage unit. We'll size the storage approach to the timeline you actually expect, and we'd rather you build in a buffer week or two than scramble if a closing slips.

A few things matter more than the price quote, and they're worth asking about directly before you sign anything:

• Whether the mover actually coordinates storage as part of the job, or just hands you a phone number. A real coordinated service means the mover books the unit (or works with you to book it), schedules the load and the redelivery, and is on-site for both. A phone number to a storage facility isn't coordination — it's a referral.
• Whether they have established relationships with specific facilities. Movers who regularly work with the same East Bay storage partners know which facilities have truck-accessible loading, which run move-in promotions, which have climate control, and which are reliable on the operational side. That knowledge saves you from picking the cheapest unit on Google and finding out on move day that the truck doesn't fit.
• Whether you get a written inventory. Every item going into storage should be tagged, numbered, and listed on an inventory sheet you keep a copy of. Without one, there's no baseline to compare against if something is missing on delivery.
• How items are packed for storage. Furniture stacked in a unit without proper pad-wrapping is far more likely to come out with scuffs, dents, pressure marks, or moisture damage than the same furniture loaded carefully by a moving crew. Ask whether pad-wrapping and stretch-wrapping are included, or whether they're an upcharge.
• Licensing and credentials. In California, household goods movers must be licensed by the Bureau of Household Goods and Services and carry a Cal-T number, which should be displayed on quotes, contracts, and trucks. Verify it before you book. The FMCSA's Protect Your Move guide is also a good resource for understanding your rights, especially if your move crosses state lines.
• Clear pricing for the redelivery. Make sure the quote covers both the initial load into storage and the eventual move out of storage to the new address. Some movers price only the first leg and surprise customers with a second bill later.
