Most people spend hours at Home Depot or scrolling Amazon trying to figure out what size boxes to buy and how many they need. They grab a bundle of 20 medium boxes, get halfway through packing, and realize they need small boxes for books, large boxes for comforters, a dish box for the kitchen, and specialty boxes for the TV and hanging clothes. Then they make a second trip. Sometimes a third.
The simpler approach is to let us size the kit for you. When you book a move with JH Moving, we go through your home on the estimate call (or at a walkthrough) and figure out what you actually need. Box quantities, dish boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, wardrobe boxes, TV boxes, and any specialty materials the job requires. Everything gets quoted upfront as part of your estimate. On move day, the crew arrives with it all.

What's Included With Every Booked Move
Every booked move with JH Moving includes these items at no extra charge for use during the move:
- Up to 2 TV boxes. Sized for flatscreens up to 65 inches. Retail cost $15 to $25 each.
- Up to 5 wardrobe boxes. Hang clothes straight from your closet. Retail cost $12 to $18 each.
- Moving blankets, shrink wrap, tape, floor runners, crew tools. Everything the crew needs to protect your furniture and your home during the move.
These items come with the job at no charge. TV boxes, wardrobe boxes, and blankets stay with the crew after the move.
What's In a Packing Kit
The packing kit is how we cover everything beyond the included TV and wardrobe boxes. It gets sized to your home based on a walkthrough or detailed photos, priced upfront as line items in your estimate, and brought on move day.
A typical kit includes:
- Small, medium, and large boxes in the right quantities for your home size
- Dish boxes (double-walled, built for kitchen items) for the kitchen
- Packing paper (unprinted, which matters because newspaper ink stains ceramic and china)
- Bubble wrap for fragile items
- Mirror cartons for artwork and framed pieces
- Additional wardrobe boxes beyond the 5 included, if your closets need more
- Additional TV boxes beyond the 2 included, if you have more screens
- Tape, markers for labeling, and other packing-day materials
Kits are priced as line items in your estimate, not rolled into a flat fee. You see what the materials cost and what they cover. Retail cost for equivalent supplies at Home Depot, U-Haul, or Amazon for a 3-bedroom house typically runs $200 to $400. Our kits usually come in below that because we buy in volume.
Boxes and supplies sold as part of a kit are yours to keep. The TV and wardrobe boxes, blankets, and tape that come free with a booked move stay with the crew after the job.
How Many Boxes Does a Home Actually Need
Most online box calculators lowball these numbers because they assume a minimalist scenario. Real homes we pack every week usually need more.
Rough ranges based on what we actually see:
- Studio: 15 to 30 boxes
- 1-bedroom: 25 to 50 boxes
- 2-bedroom: 40 to 70 boxes
- 3-bedroom: 70 to 120 boxes
- 4-bedroom or larger: 100 or more
The range is wide on purpose. A minimalist 3-bedroom might need 70 boxes. A family that's lived in the same 3-bedroom for 15 years with a full kitchen, a garage, and closets packed with a decade of accumulated stuff often needs 110 to 120. Same home, very different box counts.
A few things that push the count up: full kitchens with a lot of plates, glassware, and pantry items; home offices or libraries with books; garages, attics, or basements; craft rooms or hobby areas; closets with extensive wardrobes; collections (vinyl, holiday decor, sports equipment); and how long you've lived in the home.
Rather than guess from bedroom count alone, the better approach is a free in-person or virtual walkthrough. We look at what's actually in your home (not just square footage) and size the kit to match. It takes 15 to 20 minutes and it's the difference between running out of boxes at 11 PM on packing night and having exactly what you need.
